OWEGO (WBNG) -- Right now, hunters are in the woods waiting for their perfect shot.

However, a nationwide shortage is affecting both hunters and store owners across the region.

Regular deer season began just days ago in the Southern Tier, but area sporting goods stores are having trouble keeping the shelves stocked with ammunition.

In Owego, Lock-N-load Sporting Goods Clerk Allen Dutton said he believes manufacturing companies can’t keep up with the high demand.

“It’s very hard to get ammo,” said Dutton. “Every day we call our suppliers, every day our suppliers call us, and we have to be very alert with what’s available. We’ve also gone to outside sources. So, we’ve managed at Lock-N-Load to have ammo and we have more than most.”

To make sure ammo is available, customers are being limited on the amount they can buy, but ammunition isn’t the only item in high demand.

Dutton said guns and magazines are difficult to get a hold of right now.

“There are no wait times,” Dutton said. “Most of the time it’s not available. Things are allocated from the companies which means they’re not available unless they get a certain amount and then they dull them out to their best suppliers - and that’s why we keep on our suppliers - to make sure that we’re one of those companies that get the cream of the crop.”

However, Lock-N-Load offers more than just ammunition and firearms, and despite this year’s challenges, Dutton is expecting a busy season.

“Already in the taxidermy room we’ve gotten a great amount of deer just from bow season alone,” he said. “The weather is agreeable and I do believe there’s a lot of deer out there. So, I think this is going to be one of the better seasons yet.”

Lock-N-Load is recommending customers to call before heading to the store to see if the items they’re looking for are available.
