ENDICOTT (WBNG) -- On Monday, an Endicott classroom had an ‘out of this world’ experience when students were able to speak one-on-one with the United States Space Force.

“By just having that chance to meet with somebody makes it real,” said Fifth Grade Teacher Taylor Norton. “Giving them that opportunity and that experience to see that there are different careers out there that maybe they’ve never even heard of yet.”

Now, students from Homer Brink have a new perspective on STEM and STEAM programs.

For fifth grader Emilia, “I love hearing about all of that because I never really knew much about it before that.”

As for fifth grader Luke, he said he loved the experience.

“Getting to meet someone who like does all this stuff that controls that satellites, the GPS that we use every day and figuring out that we’re connected to space all throughout our daily lives - it’s just so interesting,” Luke said.

Throughout the month of December, the Space Force is participating in outreach programs to connect with more kids in classrooms.

Norton said this opportunity is rare, and he hopes it inspires his students for years to come.

“By just having that chance to meet with somebody makes it real,” Norton said. “Giving them that opportunity and that experience to see that there are different careers out there that maybe they’ve never even heard of yet.”

For fifth grader Tommy, this is something he’s dreamed of for years.

“I’ve always loved engineering and I’ve wanted to be an engineer since I was like 5 years old,” he said.

For Emilia, she said a career is STEM could be her future.

“After hearing that possibly. It’s never something I’ve really thought about before but after hearing that it sounds really cool to me,” she said.

Norton’s fifth grade class has been learning STEM programs during their time at Homer Brink, and they said they’re excited more opportunities within STEM.
