‘It’s more important than ever to get your flu shot’ according to the Broome County Department of Health
(WBNG) -- The Broome County Department of Health is using National Influenza Week which takes place from Dec. 5 to 11 to make one last push to get the flu shot into peoples’ arms.
According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, a flu vaccine is the best defense against influenza and can reduce the risk of illness by 40 to 60%.
With such a bizarre flu season last year due to COVID-19 precautions such as wearing a mask, the nation observed an extreme decline in the number of influenza cases. Here in Broome County, 47 cases of influenza were reported in the 2020 to 21 season compared to 2,776 lab-confirmed cases in 2019 to 20.
Officials at the Broome County Department of Health believe the flu vaccine is will play a critical role in keeping everyone healthy over the next several months.
“Since [the flu] did not circulate widely last year, people will have few defenses coming into this flu season... it’s more important than ever to get your flu shot,” said Public Health Educator at the Broome County Department of Health Chelsea Reome-Nedlik.
