BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- With the weather becoming more hazardous by the day, keeping yourself and your furry friends warm and comfortable is a big priority.

Shelter Manager Amberly Ondria Binghamton Humane Society spoke with us to provide information that can help make sure your pets stay safe in these harsh conditions.

Being observant of your pet while you let them out or take them on a walk is critical to making sure they are warm and comfortable.

“If you’re cold they are probably going to be cold. So if you are outside and you don’t have gloves or a hat and you feel your fingers start to tingle, that’s a good indication that it might be too cold for the animal’s feet,” stated Ondria. “When you get into the thirties, it is a good idea to make sure that you are bringing your pets inside.”

“You want to make sure that all animals that typically inside stay inside,” said Ondria. “With temperatures, we will be experiencing, frostbite can happen very quickly in a matter of thirty minutes, especially with windchill.”

Ondria said you should be limiting your pet’s time outside when letting them out can help keep them from becoming too cold.

“Make sure your furry friends have a warm spot inside, you are going to want to make sure to take a towel and dry off their paws if they have been outside,” she said.

Following these tips should help keep your friends safe and comfortable during the harsh winter. Being responsible for your pets and keeping them warm will make them happier and excited for warmer days to come.
