(WBNG) -- Now that winter is upon us, there’s concerns about rock salt and the effects of it in our waterways.

The New York State Department of Transportation told 12 News that it follows strict snow and ice guidelines to make sure the highways are safe for drivers.

DOT said it understands that there’s a balance between protecting the environment and maintaining safe highways.

In a statement from NYSDOT,“The Department utilizes state-of-art salt spreading equipment, and we make sure all of the equipment is calibrated at the beginning of the snow and ice season, and then calibrated routinely throughout the season to ensure it is applying salt at the prescribed rates.

Currently, NYSDOT minimizes salt use through a variety of ways, including automated spreader equipment, prescribed application rates, calibration, training drivers on best practices, and brining/prewetting.

We use several other ice melting products and techniques and are continuously developing and testing products and methods that mitigate impacts on the environment.”
