CHENANGO (WBNG) -- Before the snow started to fall this season, there was a shortage of plow truck drivers across New York state.

Now, with a recent surge in COVID-19, Department of Transportation crews around the northeast have been put under even more stress to keep roads safe to travel as they deal with outbreaks.

The Broome County Highway Division confirmed with 12 News that their crew has been impacted by the virus.

Yet, officials believe that roads can still be safely maintained at this time.

“I think we will be able to handle it,” said the Deputy Commissioner of Broome County Highway Division Sue Brown. “It may take longer to get around the routes but we certainly will do everything we can to make this happen.”

Brown said the Highway Division is taking it day-by-day but in the case of an emergency, there is a plan to ensure safe roads for the public.
