(WBNG) -- The Catholic Schools of Broome County are celebrating the 48th annual “Catholic Schools Week” from Jan. 30 to Feb. 5 with daily activities to go with this year’s theme of faith, excellence and service.

To kick off this celebration, Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham joined officials and students from the Catholic schools on Monday for a CSBC flag-raising ceremony outside of Binghamton City Hall.

At the flag-raising, Mayor Kraham officially proclaimed Jan. 31 as “Catholic Schools Week” in Binghamton, encouraging citizens to observe this week with appropriate civic and community events.

“If you look at the students who graduate on an annual basis, whether it’s in academics, athletics, in extracurricular activities, music, entrepreneurship, these are students that are leading our city and leading our community,” said Kraham.

The four celebrating Catholic Schools of Broome County are Seton Catholic Central, St. James, St. John’s and All Saints.

The schools will be celebrating faith by holding several masses. For excellence, the students will be competing in different kinds of academic, athletic and performing arts events. The students will also be participating in many projects serving nursing home patients, food pantries and more.

On Feb. 1 at 12:40 p.m., Syracuse Diocese Bishop Douglas J. Lucia will celebrate mass at Seton Catholic Central.

Seton Catholic Central and St. James have designated Feb. 3 as Teacher Appreciation Day where students at Seton will have the opportunity to dress for their future profession. St. James is planning a teacher luncheon where students can dress as their favorite character from a book or author.

St. John’s and All Saints have Teacher Appreciation Day on Feb. 4 where the 6th-grade students will face faculty and staff to games of volleyball.

Bishop Lucia will also visit All Saints on Feb. 7 from 9 to 11:00 a.m. and the school choir will perform during an assembly in the gym.
