(WBNG) -- Thursday, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced she is pushing to fully fund the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Broadband program.

The $350 million worth of federal funding proposed would help connect the 17% of Americans living in rural communities who do not have access to the internet according to Gillibrand’s office.

Gillibrand believes that access to reliable broadband is critical and a must for communities across New York to thrive in the modern world.

“We owe it to every American to ensure that we are able to make use of this critical resource and are not locked out of opportunities simply because of where they live,” said Gillibrand.

Gillibrand said she is confident that this funding will receive bipartisan support and give New Yorkers access to millions worth of funding to help them become connected to broadband.
