WINDSOR (WBNG) -- Bus driver shortages are impacting school districts across the nation and the Southern Tier is no different.

“Windsor, like many school districts around the region, is experiencing a shortage of school bus drivers,” said WSCD Director of Transportation Christopher Durdon.

Which is why the district is taking action and actively looking to hire new drivers for the coming school year.

“For the last couple of years it seems like the shortage has really become a critical need,” said Durdon. “When you talk to most transportation directors across region and also superintendents, we’re really at a critical point and encourage people to come in.”

Durdon said the district has immediate openings for September and is ready to help anyone interested in driving.

“We absolutely offer everything in house here. We just need them to come in with a positive attitude and have people that love working with kids.”

In order to be a bus driver, you must be 21 years of older, have a clean background check and driving record, and go through an interview process.

“They have to go through some drug and alcohol testing, fingerprinting, take some online tests, and then they have practical experience which is driving behind the wheel. A combination of all that would be a road test. From there it’s typically board approval and then you’re on your way to becoming a school bus driver,” said Durdon.

However, while it may seem intimidating, it’s not.

“Realizing that how easy the buses handle, I think people think they’re a little intimidated by the size, but I think another reason we want to get people actually behind the wheel experiencing how smooth they ride.” said Durdon. “I think that will ease a little bit of tension and hopefully encourage people to take advantage of these opportunities.”

The district will be hosting a Bus Driver Open House on Sat. May 21 from 10 A.M. until noon at the Windsor Central School District Bus Garage located at 206 Main Street.

Those interested will also be able to test drive a bus to see if it’s the right fit for them.

If you’re unable to make the open house, individuals are encouraged to contact the district at (607) 655-8241 or follow this link here.
