Binghamton baseball advances in conference tournament after defeating UMass Lowell 8-5
ORONO, Maine (WBNG) - Shortstop Jake Evans extended his hitting streak to a program-record 22 games as the Binghamton Bearcats advanced in the America East Conference tournament, taking down UMass Lowell 8-5 at Matheny Diamond in Maine.
The winner’s bracket final was a back and forth battle the two teams trading runs throughout. The River Hawks took the lead three times in the tops of the second, third, and fifth innings. Each time, the Bearcats responded with a tying run in the bottom of the frame. Tied 3-3, BU took its first lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-3. But in the top of the seventh, UMass Lowell tied it back up at five runs each.
But in the bottom of the seventh, BU took the lead for good with two runs on three hits. With one out, third baseman Devan Bade put down a bunt single. First baseman Andrew Tan followed with a single to left, putting runners on first and second. Evans then smacked one into right-center, scoring Bade to give his team a 6-5 lead. With the single, Evans extended his hit streak to 22 games, breaking the school record of 21 set by Joe Charron in 2010. Then with runners on first and third, pinch-hitter Garrett Matheny sacrifice-bunted, scoring Tan to make it 7-5.
In the bottom of the eighth, second baseman Nick Roselli provided an insurance run with a solo homerun over the wall in right-center. The homer was Roselli’s fourth of the season.
