‘Spotlight on Nonprofits’: Tioga County Rural Ministry
Each month, the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce is spotlighting local nonprofits and businesses.
OWEGO (WBNG) -- Each month, the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce is spotlighting local nonprofits and businesses.
On Thursday, Tioga County Rural Ministry was named the first “Spotlight on Nonprofits” for June 2022.
“We get to be the heart and hands of this whole community,” said Tioga County Rural Ministry Executive Director Sister Mary O’Brien. “We get to see the lives that are changed or the crisis that is averted because we can help.”
With a staff of 200 volunteers, Tioga County Rural Ministry helps to serve the unmet needs across the community.
“When people come asking for financial assistance, something has happened; It might be a health situation, it might be be employment, change in jobs or they lost hours in jobs, or it might just be some crisis that just happened in the family. It’s about giving people tools for life - and I think we can do that,” O’Brien said.
The Owego nonprofit helps families fill their pantries and cover financial costs where needed.
“We assist people who are in a crisis situation; It might be regarding employment, it might be regarding housing, it might be the need for a gas card, any kind of bill. We do a lot of that,” said O’Brien.
While the organization is making a big impact on a small area, O’Brien said it wouldn’t be where it is today without the community and volunteers.
“We can do the work that we do and the programs that we offer because we live in this amazing community. This is not a rich county. We do not have a whole lot of wealthy people living here, but we do have generous people.”
