ENDWELL (WBNG) -- A new business is helping to expand broadband access across Broome County.
On Monday, the community celebrated Endwell’s new Empire Access location, welcoming the expansion of broadband service.
“Binghamton is under-served,” said Empire Access Chief Operating Officer Jim Baase. “You basically have one internet provider and we looked at it and said there’s a lot of room for more providers in this area and decided this will be a good business for Empire to provide inexpensive internet and improve services.”
Baase said Endwell’s location will act as a flagship office; Offering fiber optics across Southern Tier communities in homes and businesses.
“One thing that Empire prides itself on is working with communities to bring broadband to rural markets,” said Baase. “We’ve got private, public partnerships with Livingston County, Madison County and Yates County building rural fiber and we’re going to start those conversations with Broome County as well.”
In Endicott, Mayor Linda Jackson said plans are already being discussed with the telecommunications company, which includes adding internet to businesses on the Avenue, apartment buildings and helping lower-income families.
“We’re going to be working with Empire to help our people who need internet and can’t afford it to get it; Especially with the kids needing it for school now. It’s very important,” Jackson said. “It’s new technology and we have to keep up.”
Jackson said the community is one of many that’s lacking broadband, and expanding public service is just the beginning.
“I think this is going to bring a lot of people into our community. If we can get people to start visiting around the whole village of Endicott, it’s going to help us a lot,” she said.
Empire Access is located on Main St. in Endwell directly behind Bridal Emporium.
