STEVENS POINT (WBNG) -- On Thursday, the Rail-Trail Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania introduced Susquehanna County’s newest addition, the Stevens Point Bridge.

“Today is just another mark in that beautiful milestone of a vision that individuals had more than 30 years ago,” said Sen. Lisa Baker.

A milestone the council said closes the gap of a 38-mile trail and over 70-miles of state green-way through linkage with the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Trail.

“All the bridges are very important connecting points,” said retired Executive Director of the Rail-Trail Council of Northeastern P.A. Lynn Conrad.

Conrad has been working with the rail-trail for nearly three decades, and this bridge is just the beginning.

“Our whole trail has seven railroad bridges,” Conrad said. “So, this is one that was not being re-decked, it was actually being rebuilt. So, it’s an important connection to keep people off the road. You can use the state route to get around, but this way it keeps people safe and on the trail.”

Baker said the new bridge opens a door full of opportunities across the county and state.

“Trails link communities, tails link economic development, and trails link people to the outdoors,” said Baker. “This is just a tremendous regional asset.”

However, Conrad said this project is just the beginning.

In conjunction to the bridge’s opening, the council is working to put a trail head near the bridge and adding additions across trails throughout the state.

“The next project will connect to the south and it will connect to where the trail is improved. So, there’s about a ten mile section in the middle of the DNH that needs improvements,” Conrad said.

The new bridge is locatedin Stevens Point, Pennsylvania off of Rockwell Road.
