Town supervisor gives update on FedEx distribution center to come to Broome County in 2022
BROOME COUNTY (WBNG) - Eyes are on Kirkwood as construction continues along Industrial Park Drive for the future FedEx distribution center.
“I’m very happy about it because it just sat there for so long just there and nothing really happening,” said Town of Kirkwood Supervisor Lew Grubham. “It’s good for our community, it’s good for Broome County, and the whole area.”
When it comes to a completion date, the town supervisor says he has been told it’s slated for later this year. “I know they were initially planning on moving in in October,” said Grubham. “... For my eye, it looks like that could be possible. They work six to seven days a week up there with a big crew so they’re pushing hard to get it done.”
Supervisor Grubham says FedEx doesn’t want to miss major dates that lead to an influx of opportunity, such as Christmas Eve.
Once the construction phase is complete, expect it to provide employment for hundreds of area residents. “It’s going to provide an additional 250 to 300 jobs, according to FedEx,” said Grubham.
When reflecting on the 458,000-square-foot structure with now national ties, Supervisor Grubham believes FedEx scouted the site because of its size, the price, and because of the lot having Interstate 81 and NY 17 around.
Some jobs are posted right now for the Industrial Park Drive site. Those seeking employment can head to this website to see more options emerge as the date gets closer.
