Summer programs keeping Broome-Tioga BOCES campus busy

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- School may be out for the summer, but there’s still learning to be done.
Special effects makeup, culinary arts, construction and more; These are just some of the classes keeping the Broome-Tioga BOCES campus busy this summer.
BT BOCES Center for Career and Technical Excellence Principal Jeff Franey said there’s about 800 students on the BOCES campus participating in multiple summer activities, including the CTE 5th Grade Summer Camp.
“They come and play in our CTE rooms and get excited for a the trades we have,” said Franey.
There’s about 200 students in the CTE program trying their hand at a new trade each day.
“I’ve taken automatic, electric, criminal justice, animal science and this is the fourth day and this is HERO,” said CTE 5th Grade Summer Camp participant Gabriel Manzer.
For CTE 5th Grade Summer Camp participant Brielle Durkot who’s entering 6th grade this Fall, this summer is about her future.
“Just a little bit better of a idea of what I want to be when I get older,” Durkot said.
Other programs include the Summer STEAM Academy, P-TECH Summer High School Programs, and Summer Special Education Programs.
“The summer program is a 6 week program,” Summer School Coordinator for the PALS Program Lindsey Woodnorth said. “So, they still get a little bit of summer break - two weeks before summer school and two weeks after summer school - So, they still get to have fun if they want to go on vacation with their families, but then when they come here to school it’s consistency, it’s routine, and it’s a lot of the same people that they deal with during the year and it’s just fun.”
Kids in BOCES Special Education Programs range from ages 5 to 21, taking classes like art, gym, STEAM and music.
However, with just over a month left until the start of school, it’s about ensuring that skills learned throughout the school year are maintained.
