ENDICOTT (WBNG) -- When it comes to the DICK’s Sporting Goods Open, almost a full year of planning goes into making it a premier event here in the Southern Tier.

Tournament Director John Karedes has been with the event for decades now and says he’s gotten used to putting it all together.

“It isn’t pressuring as much as it is excitement,” said Karedes. “You want to put on the best show possible for the community, the fans, the sponsors, DICK’s Sporting Goods, you know everyone involved we want to put on the best show.”

And with his years of experience, Karedes said he’s always learning something new to try and make the next tournament even better.

“We all want to get better each and every year so I think it’s listening and listening to any of the feedback from the prior year,” Karedes said. “But one thing that had made this year maybe a little more challenging than any other is we haven’t done an event on this scale in over a thousand days. It goes back really to 2019.”

But Karedes said he cannot put on the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open every year alone. He said it’s important to remain flexible, patient and to keep in mind that it can’t all be done just by himself and his staff. He credited volunteers at the tournament for their help.

“You need to turn to that army of volunteers that we have and we’re so lucky to have here in our community that really make it all happen,” Karedes noted. “Because the seven of us in the office, can’t put on this show. We need those 15 or 1,600 volunteers to make it happen and make it be a first-class event.”
