ENDWELL, N.Y. (WBNG) - The Maine-Endwell Spartans had a very successful 2021, bulldozing their opponents in the playoffs on their way to a Class B championship win over Pleasantville in Syracuse.

Now, in 2022, the Spartans are reloading a bit without star quarterback Mike Mancini, as new starter Anthony Policare enters the mix. The new leader of the offense will have to take charge in ways similar to how Mancini did it in years prior. But Policare is up to the challenge, and helping him along the way at M-E are a bevy of returning players. Guys like senior running back Aiden McHugh and lineman Adam DeSantis. But it’s not just those two guys, all the returners on the Maine-Endwell offense have made the transition from 2021 to 2022 an easy one.

“He [Policare] is a great fit off the rip. And then adding on that, we grow together, all of us are so close that he slides right in and we keep going,” said DeSantis. “Obviously we go day by day, just take a new step each day, and try to progress 1% each day.”

“We want to progress over weeks and weeks. Getting the plays right, working on the chemistry, things like that,” Policare added. “And just going over the little things. We started out broad but now we’re working on the little things to get ready.”

The Spartans open up their season at home on Saturday, September 10 against Union-Endicott. Kickoff from Endwell is at 1:30 p.m.
