WHITNEY POINT (WBNG) - Two focus groups were held Sept. 13 by the Broome County Office for Aging.

Over at the Broome West Senior Center and the Northern Broome Senior Center, the goal was to get general input regarding transportation services for the older adults within the county. “We’re here today to find out from older adults in Broome County sort of what their experience is with transportation, what their needs are, what transportation they use, how they get around now, and ways they think we could improve their access to the community,” said Consultant Charles Dickson with Community Transportation Association of America.

Dickson was brought to the area to assist with this overall effort. During his conversation with 12 News, he shared why this outreach is happening in the first place. “The recently passed infrastructure bill along with the reconciliation bill that just passed.. It’s going to bring a lot more resources to transportation so we just need to find out from older adults what their needs are so resources can be targeted to that,” said Dickson. Also, according to the consultant, the Office for Aging wants to make sure the needs of the community are being met.

If a Broome County resident couldn’t make it out Sept. 13, the consultant said to reach out to the Office for Aging to voice views or concerns regarding transportation services for the older population. The Office for Aging will also be reaching out to folks.

“What we’re hoping to do is build on these focus groups that we’re holding, and in the future, have a bigger community-wide discussion on transportation issues,” said Dickson. He believes the larger discussion is a goal for closer to the end of the year with the hopes of making official adjustments at some point in 2023.
