BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- Senator Kirsten Gillibrand came to Binghamton University to announce millions in federal funding for New Energy New York.

The grant is meant to spur economic development in Binghamton and make the Southern Tier a leader in battery technology.

The funding will allow New Energy New York to accelerate battery technology innovation in the state and bring more jobs to the community.

Senator Gillibrand said, without momentum, growth for the lithium battery innovation, Binghamton has the potential to become a global hub for energy storage manufacturing and restore the region’s manufacturing glory.

Lithium-ion batteries are integral to electric vehicle production along with components in everyday products like laptops and cell phones.

Gillibrand says the energy storage technology has the potential to help develop a more sustainable energy future.
