BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday that Vernon I. Riddick, 31, of Binghamton will be sentenced for weapon possession.

The district attorney’s office said Riddick plead guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a felony.

On July 24, Riddick possessed an unlicensed and loaded Glock handgun in Binghamton. Around 3:30 a.m. Riddick was driving erratically on Court Street when a Binghamton patrol car tried to stop him. He then fled on foot and police found the handgun in a garbage can in the area he fled after his capture.

Riddick will be sentenced to five years in prison when he is sentenced on Dec. 20. He is also facing five years of post-release supervision.

He was previously convicted of a felony assault in 2017, the district attorney’s office noted.

“While the citizens of Broome County are asleep the Binghamton Police Department and other local agencies are at work ridding our streets of violent criminals and dangerous weapons,” said Broome County District Attorney Michael A. Korchak.
