BIG FLATS, NY (WBNG) -- The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office announced charges from an arrest in a motel assault investigation.

The sheriff’s office said it charged 47-year-old Michael J. Petix with assault in the second degree and criminal contempt in the first degree, both felonies, on Sept. 18.

Petix is accused of assaulting his girlfriend, of whom he had a protection order against him, the sheriff’s office said.

On Sept 14, authorities reported Petix had led law enforcement on a foot chase on the highway causing several crashes. He also stabbed himself in the neck until he was taken down by a New York State Trooper’s K9.
