(WBNG) - As part of Hunger Action Month, Southern Tier businesses are coming together to compete in this year’s “Leader Of The Pack Corporate Challenge” hosted by The Food Bank Of The Southern Tier.

The challenge began at the beginning of the week and will run until Thursday, Sept. 22.

Teams will be competing both in-person and virtually.

In-person teams will have one hour to pack as many backpacks with food as possible, while also competing throughout the week online to see whose virtual store collects the most contributions.

Food Bank Of The Southern Tier’s Corporate Partnerships Manager Katherine Strawser told 12 News that 18 percent of children in the Southern Tier are food insecure and qualify for free and reduced-priced school meals.

“Many children who receive free and reduced school meals are left without the nutrition they need on the weekends and holiday breaks when school’s not in session,” Strawser said.

The packed bags will be taken home by children at risk of hunger on weekends and during school breaks.

“Having this support from these corporate partners and from the community to raise funds, raise awareness and advocate for certain programs to continue to stay in place really makes a big impact,” she told 12 News. “It brings hope to the children who are facing hunger on the weekends and holiday breaks.”
