DICKINSON (WBNG) -- The Broome County Sheriff’s Office has 21 members graduating from its Corrections Academy on Friday.

The sheriff’s office noted that Friday marked the completion of nearly three months of what it described as grueling training that includes learning defensive tactics, studying law and more.

Two of the graduates will serve as members of the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office, two others will become members of the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office and the remaining 17 will serve Broome County at the correctional facility.

The new hires at the Broome County Sheriff’s Office will begin serving on June 17 and help fill staffing needs created through retiring staff and other attrition.

Of their graduation, Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar said:

“Congratulations to these outstanding men and women on their graduation today and to Corrections Academy Director Shawn Nalepa for all he’s done to prepare them. Our graduates represent the continuation of our ongoing commitment to excellence in the Broome County Corrections Division and our commitment to the safety and well-being of our incarcerated individuals, as well as those charged in their care. Our graduates will also serve as welcome support and relief for our hardworking men and women currently serving in the Corrections Division.”

“I went to school for law enforcement, I actually had Undersheriff Davis as an instructor and here I am now,” said 2024 Corrections Academy graduate Ahmed Abdallah. “The Academy has been a privilege to experience. I’m glad to have been allowed to be a part of it, and if I could do it again, I would.”

Members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division oversee the Broome County Correctional Facility through a variety of specialized roles, including Investigations, Classifications, Field Training & Instruction, Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team and more.
