CORTLAND, N.Y. (WBNG) - The New York State High School Football Coaches Association hosted the Girls 7 on 7 Flag Football Championships at Cortland State Friday afternoon. The inaugural girls tournament was open to all New York State High Schools and girls who played during the Spring 2024 season.

Games began at 12 P.M., with the final round concluding just after 6 P.M. The tournament followed New York State Girls Flag Football rules, except games were played on half a field and there was no punting.

Maine-Endwell lost their first two games, but rebounded with back-to-back wins to grab the nine seed. Division-2 spring flag football champion Owego was throwing touchdowns left and right, securing the three seed for the playoffs.

The Waverly offense was also churning in pool play, which found themselves going in as the six seed into elimination play. The runner-ups to the D-1 spring flag football championship Binghamton Patriots rolled to victories in their first two games, earning them the seven seed.

12 Sports spoke with Binghamton head coach Vaughn Labor about the sport and today’s summer tourney.

“I feel like the sport is kind of developing in different places in their own hubs around the state, said Labor. “This is a cool opportunity to see what other people are doing, how they’re approaching the game, different schemes and stuff, and gives another opportunity for our girls to come out and participate.”

Minisink Valley went on to win the tournament against Pioneer in the finals.
