Chapel Hill, NC (WBNG) -- Eight-time Superbowl-winning coach Bill Belichick is finalizing a deal with the University of North Carolina to become the Tar Heels head coach in place of Mack Brown, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Belichick would head back to school and take over the head coach role at the University his father spent time as an assistant coach from 1953 to 1955.

On ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” Belichick said he had spent his time away from coaching in the NFL, taking a deeper look at college football throughout the 2024 season.

Belichick joked with McAfee about not going into more detail and said he wants to get his notorious “press conference aura back.”

On Nov. 26, the school announced that it would not bring back its all-time winningest coach for a seventh season in Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels moved on from 73-year-old Brown for 72-year-old Belichick, who has never spent any time at the colligate level during his coaching career.

However, Belichick bolstered a Hall of Fame career in the NFL. He won six Super Bowls as the Patriots head coach, two Super Bowls with the New York Giants and coached legendary QB Tom Brady for most of Belichick’s 24-year tenure with the Pats.

Belichick didn’t go into much detail about his plans for coaching at the college level, but he mentioned that if he were a college coach, his team “Would be an NFL program at a college level.”

The legalization of Name Image & Likeness (NIL) deals in college football opens the door for a first-tie college coach who understands the monetary aspect after spending his professional career with athletes at the next level.

Belichick said his program would treat the student-athletes as professional athletes.

“It would be a professional program: Training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, techniques that would transfer to the NFL,” said Belichick.
