Cornell Men’s Lacrosse celebrates National Championship and graduation back on campus
ITHACA, NY (WBNG) -- The 2025 Men’s Lacrosse National Champion, Cornell Big Red, brought the trophy back to Ithaca to celebrate their championship win with a parade, coinciding with graduation for the team’s seniors.
After winning the National Championship for the first time in 48 years, Cornell’s Men’s Lacrosse returned to campus with the trophy in hand to share in the celebration with friends, family and fans.
Prior to the championship parade, a graduation ceremony was also held for the team’s seniors who missed the University’s Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, as the team was preparing to win the title in Boston.
Team members and members of Cornell University spoke to a crowd of fans there to celebrate the historic win.
Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach, Connor Buczek said they’re taking their time celebrating the historic accomplishment;
“You’re always chasing, you’re circling, you’re talking about it, you’re working towards it and now we’re there,” said Coach Buczek. “And so, trying to make sure that we give it proper time to sink in. And appreciate it. And bask in it a little bit. Just celebrate these guys. They’re a special group and we’re going to have to get baack to work at some point, but I want to make sure we don’t flip that switch too soon. Enjoy the moment, enjoy what we’ve created and accomplished and at some point we’ll turn the page and start chasing again.“
Cornell senior, CJ Kirst said after winning the National Title and graduating, it’s going to take some time to let that sink in;
“So happy and fortunate that my mom’s here, to be there with me. And to have my brothers there on Memorial Day was incredible,” said Kirst. “And yea, I don’t know if, when I’ll take that time to step back. But, no, just excited to, you know, celebrate with my classmates, with my best friends. And now being alumni and to be able to do it with all the alums too, you know, that’s what you play for. And so happy to bring it back to Ithaca.”
Those in attendance were also able to get autographs and take pictures with the team following the gathering.
