Four-legged companions recognized as Guthrie Lourdes celebrates decate of pet therapy program
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — A decade of animals walking the halls at Guthrie Lourdes Hospital has brought smiles to patients and staff over the years. Those smiles appeared again on Monday as the hospital celebrated the program’s 10th year.
The celebration was held inside the Guthrie Lourdes Atrium, where seven dogs ranging from big to small were there greeting guests and staff.
The dogs are trained service animals and are owned and brought in by local volunteers.
One of the volunteers at the celebration on Monday told 12 News that the program brightens the days of those who need it.
“The patients really love it, it really helps bring calmness ot the floor, especially if families are suffering with somebody dying or anything,” said Brenda Sylvester, one of the volunteers with Githrie Pet Therapy. “It just brings a sense of happiness and kind of breaks up the monotony of the days,” she added.
The dogs are there to help the staff, too. Sylvester said the dogs help break up the staff’s day and bring them joy, especially if their shift has been really difficult.
