Cortland man charged with rape of a child under the age of 17

CORTLAND, N.Y. (WBNG) -- A Cortland man has been charged with rape and endangering the welfare of a child after a Cortland County Sheriff’s Office investigation.

In December 2025, officers received a report of sexual abuse allegations that took place between 2024 and 2025.

During an investigation, police discovered that Shawn P. Hapgood, 40, had subjected a child under the age of 17 to inappropriate sexual contact. The victim was known to Hapgood.

On July 16, Hapgood was charged with the following:

• Rape in the first degree
• Rape in the second degree
• Endangering the welfare of a child
• Unlawfully dealing with a child

He was arraigned and remanded to the Cortland County Jail on a $500 cash bail.

Hapgood is scheduled to appear in the Town of Homer Court on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m.
