Mothers & Babies raises awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WBNG) -- October is Safe Infant Sleep Awareness Month, and Mothers & Babies is educating the community about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS.
Deputy Director of Mothers & Babies Christie Finch said safe-sleeping practices are crucial to keeping infants safe.
“Co-sleeping is a big one. We have had some suffocation deaths associated with infants who passed away, also environmental tobacco smoke. So if anybody is smoking around the baby, parents falling asleep with the baby on a couch, or laying the baby on the couch or a recliner to sleep for naps,” said Finch
The organization aims to promote safe sleep practices by providing cribs and sleep sacks to parents of children under the age of 1.
Finch recommends laying your baby on their back, in a crib, alone, without stuffed animals, blankets, or bumper pads.
