BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WBNG) -- Broome-Tioga BOCES held its 15th annual robotics competition at the SUNY Broome Ice Center on Tuesday, April 21 at 10 a.m.

Over 120 students from eight different schools created their own robots to participate in several events such as maze programing, forklift challenges and king of the ring.

“Students have about a month to prep for it. They get to pick an event, and you read the rules and then prepare and build a robot from scratch and then practice and be ready for the event.” said Matt Hamilton-Jones, Broome-Tioga BOCES P-Tech teacher.

Even though students compete against each other, the event served as a beneficial real-life engineering experience.

“You’re presented with a problem and basically an engineer is presented with a problem every day, and you have to solve that problem, so I think it’s perfect for that engineering field.” Hamilton-Jones said.

Every year, the winning school keeps the trophy until the next event is held.
